Mrs. kpfleming and I are visiting family in HSV this weekend, and I booked our tickets using SkyMiles a couple of months back. Unfortunately the HPN-ATL-HSV route was not available at the 32,500 mile award level, so I had to accept an HPN-DTW-ATL-HSV route instead... which was going to make for a moderately long day of flights and layovers.
At HPN this morning, when the GAs were getting ready to start boarding the HPN-DTW flight *and* a simultaneous HPN-ATL flight, they announced that they needed three volunteers to take a later flight because the HPN-DTW flight was oversold. I volunteered to be moved onto the ATL flight (or the next ATL flight 70 minutes later), but there were no seats available.
10 minutes before departure, two passengers still hadn't shown up for the ATL flight, so the GA called us up, hand-wrote seat assignments on our boarding passes and sent us to the ATL plane. Before we arrived at ATL we'd already been placed on standby on the soonest ATL-HSV flight, got the seats, and ended up in HSV five hours earlier than planned!
