Flying home to see the family today on DL2110 ATL-DFW enjoying a pre-departure beverage and an upgrade on an award ticket as a Diamond. Life is good. Service from the f/a is great.

Everyone boarded early and prior to push back the f/a went through the F cabin offering lunch. Choice was either chicken sandwich or a chicken salad.

She get to the guy in 4A and apologizes and tells him that only salads are left. This dude went absolutely, 100% bat sh*t crazy. He started yelling, and I do mean yelling that we was a "Super Flyer with Delta (whatever that is), today was his birthday, and it wasn't his problem that they ran out of chicken sandwiches and told her to figure it out because he was eating the sandwich for lunch. She apologized again, and he went off again saying he was very important and on and on an on.

At this point she politely told the man she was very sorry for the lack of his meal choice but she was not going to be talked to that way. He went off again. F/A was in tears.

I had had enough. I turned around and told the guy that he was out of line, beyond rude, and an all around a** hole. I proceeded to tell him this was a 1 hour and 45 minute flight and it appeared that he could go without a meal if the salad wouldn't work for him.

After 10,000 feet a nice, retired guy comes forward from the bulkhead seat in Coach with a $10 bill in his hand, stands in the cabin and offers anyone who ordered the sandwich $10 cash to trade with the guy so he could have his sandwich he was so worked up over. It was priceless. This nice, calm, man owned the situation and made the point very well that this guy was out of control.

The F/A was terribly shaken by this guy. I was in disbelief as to how loud and relentless he was over a meal choice. I decided to write a note to the F/A along with a random act of kindness. Others in F got in on it and we presented the F/A with a sweet note and $240 in cash and told her to buy her crew dinner, get a massage, or whatever would make her holiday bright. Nice way to end a situation where a pax went psycho.

Upon landing, the guy stands up and announces loudly to the F cabin that he is not the bad guy that the cabin thinks he is, at which point I cut him off and assured him that he absolutely was.

I travel a ton and have never seen someone this out of line before. Especially two days before a holiday he was flying home to celebrate.
