To join Delta or not

Hello,

I am looking for a little advice from you Delta heads as to whether or not I should be considering SkyMiles.

A little about me: I am currently in a position where I travel a reasonable amount for work and I am trying to maximize my earning potential. I live in Dallas and I take on average 3-4 one way flights for work per month, and stay approximately 150 nights a year in hotels. I also have family in Europe and plan on flying there at least once if not twice this year.

I am currently Silver on US, and Gold on AA. I earned both AA Platinum and US Silver through challenges in 2011. I renewed silver on US with around 28k PQMs and 30 segments, but those were mostly earned after April. The AA Platinum just elapsed and I guess I got a 'soft landing' to gold. While living Dallas it would make sense to fly more on AA, I don't like the upgrade process and I also really don't like the MD80s. I guess my real reason for going with US though, is that my previous employer used to buy our Airline Tickets and typically cheaped out and went with US. My current employer gives us discretion to book our own tickets so I am free to fly with whomever I like.

I am seriously considering getting the Amex Delta Reserve card. The $500 fee is a little steep, but it is rather tempting. I can use a personal card for work expenses, right now I am using the Chase Sapphire Preferred and in roughly 6 months I have earned $500, plus the $400 I got for signing up. Looking at the requirements for the Amex Reserve spend, I am confident I can get the $30,000 level by the end of the year, thus getting me Silver Medallion for 2014.

My question is, is it worth it?

I am happy with US, I am batting roughly .500 on upgrades, and with a trip to London this summer, I will probably end up pushing for Gold for next year - particularly if they run another double PQM promo.

That said there are times where flying on Delta could come in handy, we don't usually frequent any one destination over another, except for PHX which I visit roughly 6 times a year. Wile the direct flight can be convenient, taking a connecting flight on Delta for the miles and segments appeals.

I understand that the Club access is only good on a Delta itinerary. Is this something that is actively enforced?

I feel confident that I could maintain both US and Delta Silver through my spending and flying habits, but is there any point?

Thanks
