Here's the situation, my fiancee regularly travels to my home city (YYZ to CMH) and we alternate using miles, both of us are Diamond Elites. When I try to book, and can't check the "award travel is for me" box, the award levels almost always change from low miles to medium miles. It's a regular discussion (sometimes it's more challenging discussion if you know what I mean) with Skymiles help desk explaining and challenging this stupid rule.
They said they'll "log a suggestion" that IF the receiver of an award ticket is high status, they should receive the same award availability as if they were booking the ticket. Certainly in today's world of technology, this would be an easy fix.
I can see if I'm booking a ticket for family or friend (with no status), I should be subject to the lame availability and higher miles required, but not if passenger is DM or PM.
