Sorry if this is in the wrong forum. Wasn't sure where to put this. I spoke to an agent from Delta yesterday and discovered something that is new to me (but of course you guys probably know about this).
I was trying to find the cheapest nonstop rate or any airline for a trip from LAX to LIH in July. I have always found the cheapest flights by booking through the airline direct by searching through Kayak (a la carte not packages). I saw many of the flights for my selected days range from $800-over $1000. I then went to a travel website I used a few times when I lived in Hawaii that would occasionally get cheaper car rental and hotel rates than any other side (assuming I didn't use Priceline or Hotwire). I was curious to see what they were charging for airfare and their price on the same Delta flight I wanted was $438.03 versus $1166.
I knew about the Delta "guarantee" about if I find the same Delta route cheaper on a third party site that Delta would refund the difference and compensate me with a $100 travel voucher. I got all excited thinking I would end up on a $338.03 roundtrip flight to Hawaii in July! I didn't want to book on Delta's website yet though until I got the deals from an agent direct (already saw the claims form on their website). The agent told me that they will only issue the price difference and $100 if it's the same class. I said well of course, both are economy. He told me it was more than just that but that the letters have to match. Sure enough the letters WERE NOT the same. On Delta's it was a K and on the website with the cheaper ticket it was a Q.
Needless to say I ended up booking the cheaper ticket and was relieved I didn't book direct with Delta.
What exactly are those letters used for? Just for of a selection than choosing a seat? Who gets bumped first (lower letter, first bumped?)?
Thanks
Nevermind. I wish I could delete.
