No more GAs running down to bring the last minute UG BP?

I've read many stories here on how you should wait at the gate as long as possible when there are unclaimed BE seats and you're on the bubble of a Medallion UG. Sure enough, I've gotten some confirmation on that today.

I was 9th on the UG list for what turned out to be 8 BE seats on DL 30 SFO->JFK this morning. The GA, however, said: "You should wait; I've got two tickets held but unpaid and if they don't show up at the ticket counter with payment, we'll release the seats."

The Red Coat was kind enough to call to check-in and ask that a line-call be made to find the people who reserved the seats (BTW, how does one reserve a BE seat on DL without paying for it? I assume just on the phone?)

Boarding began, and they were finishing Zone 1 and I asked the GA on status. I asked if I could just go down and stow my bag (I was in the front EC seat without OHB storage) and whether she'd run down the boarding pass for me if it cleared.

She said: "Actually, we're not allowed to do that anymore. If you board, I can't do the upgrade". I took her at her word and waited, and she did indeed give me UG and was even holding my preferred BE seat for me that I'd asked her for earlier.

I'm curious if anyone else has had the "run down" BPs for last-minute UGs? Its happened to me many times, so I assumed it still happned, but I guess I should take the oft-stated advice here and wait to board until BE is surely full.
