Missed International Connection -compensation?

My daughter just missed an international flight from JFK to Shannon, Ireland by a few minutes tonight. She had her flight from BNA to JFK changed 4 times in a matter of minutes this afternoon. Apparently, they radioed the crew that 10 passengers were on the shuttle at JFK to get there, but they closed the door anyway and stated they could not reopen due to FAA regulations (which I am not arguing), and the plane left on time. 10 high school kids and their leaders watched as their plane left the gate, devastated that they would miss the first day of their European tour.
They will apparently be put up for the night and fed, but my beef is that I have paid $4000 for a 10 day trip ($400/day) that includes a 24 hr paid tour guide, coach bus, prepaid activities, etc. So, Delta's error has cost this group of 10 essentially $4000 for one missed day of this trip. I guess there is no compensation for massive disappointment, but surely we are entitled to something above and beyond covering their basic needs. The next flight is not until tomorrow evening.
When my husband and I had a Delta flight delayed by 2 hours from BNA-LGA we got a $75 voucher each for a future flight, and were actually put on American to get there. Another time, when our luggage didn't make it on the plane from ATL-BNA, we didn't get anything except for our luggage delivered. I'm starting to sense a pattern here....3 of the last 4 Delta flights I have dealt with or taken have had major problems.
I am not sure where to start with this. I am just a leisurely flyer- can any of you expert flyers give me some advice on how to approach customer service to get the most compensation? Which will be tomorrow, when I calm down.
