Waiting 'til JAN 13 to apply for DL Platinum credit card?

I'm overwhelmed! I'm thinking to apply for a Platinum AMEX card for the 5000 MQMs & it's low $175 fee. I am a Sky Club member, Silver status, and need about 3000 MQMs for GOLD, that's figuring in the travel I already have booked. My skymiles acct EFFECTIVE DATES are MAR 01 2012 - FEB 28 2013

Is there any reason to get the reserve card or apply for Platinum now instead of waiting?, or should I just buy the MQMs I need for GOLD & not get a card?
