Vacation Runner Commiseration Thread

Well folks, we are being given the proverbial digit by DL. Evidently they feel they will make more money from the AMex spend requirement than they make from our butts in the seats in empty planes that cross the Atlantic mid-January and occasional upcharge that we pay DL for our status. (All under the convienient disguise of "thinning the ranks" for other loyal DL Amex holders, err, elite members).

If this sticks...US/AA and UA will also follow suit, so remaining loyal to them is a moot point.

How do you all feel? One of the main joys of my GF and my crazy trips to places we would not normally go was getting our lowly FO status. Endless connections, paying $100 more here and there, and avoiding the non-stop flights all seemed worth it. I have been wanting to fly some of the middle east airlines and give a little more business to B6. I guess we can view this as a liberation to take advantage of all of those non-ST deals that appear around the web. It looks like TK will be getting a lot more of my business. I hear they have better service anyway. ^

DL applies FLL-MEX

Delta Air Lines today applied with the DOT for authority to operate between Ft. Lauderdale and Mexico City.

Delta states if plans to offer daily service on the route commencing July 2013 utilizing 160-seat Boeing 737 aircraft.
However DL also request the flexibility depending on market demand to operate the service on a seasonal basis.

OST-2013-TBA

Remember AM who tried FLL-MEX back in 2009 or 2010, but it just only a few weekly service. And also, remember DL who tried nonstop FLL-SDQ back in 2007, but they didn't have a last longer.

Specifically those 7/10 day minimum stay ex-US TATLs that usually run $1700-2500 for travel in the May-Sept.

Anyone seen or heard of any being published yet? My recollection is that they usually come out in late December, but I haven't seen anything yet...

DL Narita Travel disruption Jan 14

Delta cancelled most of their connections out of NRT on January 14 due to bad weather. Flight DL173 was rescheduled later that evening to SIN at 11:00 pm. After more that one hour on board flight crew announced flight was also cancelled since they have exceeded working hours. I was re-booked for Jan 15 same flight, had to wait at the airport for almost a day (Lot of people affected).

Today I have received an apology email with 10000 bonus miles saying that Delta is sorry travel was adversely affected by our service failure.

Did someone actually complain about this travel disruption? Any type of compensation? I

INCREDIBLY poor decision by DL ground crew re food for sale (transcon SFO-JFK)

$

So I'm on a transcon SFO-JFK 5h flight (DL30), and before we left the gate, there was a lot of discussion b/w the FAs and ground crew regarding the credit card machines used on board ("M2"s). All three machines on board were broken. The ground crew told the FAs they therefore would not be able to sell anything on board the flight. They are fully stocked with carts of food for purchase, but would not be allowed to offer any of it to the pax.

Let's put aside that I'm a Diamond and have been for years, sitting in EC this leg due to sold out BE cabin, no avail upgrades. There are older people and kids on board and plenty of other DM, PMs, etc. Delta heavily advertises their food for purchase program, so Delta flyers have every reason to expect they'll be able to buy food on board and don't need to buy or bring anything - which is especially challenging for a 615am departure, considering we were all up by 430am and scrambling through the airport. How can they decide that due to their OWN MALFUNCTION, they will not offer any food on a 5+ hour transcon flight, when people are more than happy to buy (pay cash)? In my mind, they have the food and should be giving it to people who request it for purchase, since its their machines that are broken. That has to be a better decision than simply deciding that they will keep it all locked up and tell people they can't have anything. Yes, they may run out when folks realize it free, but that's still better than starving everyone.

I have to say, I can tolerate delays and equipment changes, cancellations and sick calls, whatever -- through it all, I have always remained SO LOYAL to Delta, directing all my business to them and spending my money on Y B and M fare for long hauls even when it requires connections and less than ideal scheduling, but THIS is ludicrous to me. The FAs tell me they were very upset w/ ground personnel decision, they are embarrassed to tell people they can't have the food that is onboard, because of MONEY. Especially on such a long flight. They begged me to write a complaint letter so that "something will change", which I submitted on delta.com for whatever (little) it's worth. I'm just shocked -- it shouldn't have to require a complaint letter, but I agree that someone should be held accountable, and I'm furious. And so, so hungry!!!!

I got email today to ask me provide supporting documentation such as the actual cost as well as the original receipt for my damaged items. The problem is how can I provide this kind of doc to proof the value since this is a gift?

(i think it it worth less than 250 USD, not a lot, but actually from friend's grandparents) I am afraid to tell/ask my friend. feel so sorry.

Downward Status Change Mid-Itinerary

Did a search and couldn't find anything on downgrading status. Due to a drastic change in travel in 2012, I will be dropping from DM to FO.:td: The change will occur during an itinerary that has me departing LAX on 2/17 and returning on March 1. Short of returning a day early and getting that last window of opportunity, what can I expect to have happen on my return trip? Will I lose SP and free EC seat? Just curious if anyone here has ever experienced such a severe fall in status.

Denied for an upgrade first class

I am deaf and use American Sign Language as my primary method of communication. On December 24th, My partner and I flew to ORD via SLC. When we landed in SLC, I (My partner is hearing and interprets for me) approached to the gate agent and told her that I am deaf. She was helpless and did not know how to deal with me. Then I requested (thru interpreter -my partner) if there is first class availability. She said yes and asked for my boarding pass. I handed it to her. She looked at my boarding pass and said "Oh you guys are in an economy comfort class. It is way better than First Class." I was speechless. When we boarded the plane, we noticed there were two seats opening. I felt that I was denied to an upgrade to first class was because of my disability - deaf. So I filed a complaint to Delta. They apologized it and gave me 3,700 points. I felt insulted. What should I do? your help is greatly appreciated.

Here is what they emailed me:

Dear Mr.XXXXX.
RE: Case Number XXXXXXXX

Thank you for your patience in waiting for our response. In your
e-mail, you expressed your concerns regarding the service provided while
traveling with us on December 24 with your travel companion.
On behalf of everyone at Delta Air Lines, I sincerely
apologize for the disappointing customer service you received from our
gate agent while in Salt Lake City.

I am truly sorry for the incident you described in which our gate agent
would not allow you to upgrade to our forward cabin, despite offering to
pay. I understand how upsetting this situation must have been and I
regret that our team member did not honor your request. As our
customer, you are in the best position to point out areas that need
attention as our goal is to provide accurate information at all times.
However, it is crystal clear from your detailed note that we did not
meet this expectation for service and I am so sorry for how this
affected your trip to Chicago. Feedback like yours will help us improve
our overall customer experience. Be assured I will be sharing your
comments with our Salt Lake City Airport Customer Service leadership
team for internal follow up.

When our service does not meet our customer’s expectations, we feel it
is important to acknowledge this and attempt to make amendments. To
demonstrate my commitment to customer service and as a gesture of
apology for the poor customer service you encountered, I have added
3,700 bonus miles to each of your SkyMiles accounts. Please allow three
business days for the miles to appear.

Mr. XXXXXX, we appreciate your continued loyalty and support since 1999.
Again, I hope you will accept my sincere apology and my assurance this
incident has been appropriately addressed with the team member involved
regarding our upgrade policy. However, we still value your business and
given the opportunity of serving you in the future, I am confident Delta
will not only meet but exceed your expectations.

Sincerely,

When to add AS FF number to DL reservation

I am DL FO flying on DL metal this weekend. I am trying to decide whether to credit the flight to AS. Right now, I have my DL number entered in the system.

I was wondering what is the best time/place to change it to AS number if I decide to change it: Call DL customer service ahead of time, DL Skyclub before flying or at the gate just before boarding.

Also right now I have preferred seats selected, should I change them to normal seats to make sure I do not end up in a middle seat when my FF number is changed to AS?

ATL Layover Idea--"Sky Club Sweep"

$

Anyone remember the 1960s ABC game show “Supermarket Sweep” which involved an insane race of shopping carts through the aisles of the Food Fair supermarket in Paramus, New Jersey?

I have a trip coming up which involves a 5 hour layover in ATL. I’m considering doing a “Delta Sky Club Sweep”, visiting all nine lounges at Hartsfield-Jackson.

If my particular itinerary were to have taken place today, I would have arrived at gate A2 and departed from gate F12.

I’m thinking about rules and regulations for the sweep. I am going to keep track of my time en route. Is walking between all clubs (i.e., not taking the underground train) required? Once in the club, should I stick to one kind of drink (i.e., Sweetwater 420)? Should I take pictures inside each club?

Should the first club I visit be the “T” club, or should I go to A17, then A Centerpoint, then over to T, then to B25, then to B10, then to C, D, E and F?

This would take place on January 29 between noon and 5 pm, assuming my inbound flight is on time. I could also guest two Flyertalkers into each club, just for fun. Let me know any ideas you have about this to really make this memorable.

Just taking a break from kvetching over the new Frequent Flyer status rules.

Is it worth "steping up" to economy comfort? AMS-DTW-LAX

So, off flying to LAX again next week. Just booked. Is it worth stepping up to Economy Comfort? I'm flying out for the NAMM show and am trying to work out if I should "step up" on both legs or just the last one, where I'm more than likely going to want the sleep.

Suggestions appreciated.

Fare Rules and My Last Delta Flight

$

Hello, i'm a longtime Gold Medallion, and am currently in Honolulu, on a WAW-HNL-WAW roundtrip that i purchased on Orbitz for $800 some months ago. I also paid for Economy Comfort on the segments that i needed to, and got comped for the others. I decided i wanted to extend my trip 2-4 weeks, no specific dates, and expected to pay $250 +/- the fare difference (as i had done many times before). Imagine my surprise when i was told i could not under any circumstance. I was told that my fare does not allow ANY changes, at ANY price, and i would need to cancel the flight and buy a one-way. For ..... and giggles, i checked prices of one way flights (for Feb 18, my ideal change date). One way to WAW was $3400. Round trip on the other hand on the same date came to $1050. Wowza. I spoke with two agents to no avail, and i fired off the following e-mail.

Quote:

1. I have maintained Gold Elite status for years, going out of my way with unnecessary overnight stays in WAW, and paying a premium to fly with SkyTeam
2. I have maintained by Platinum Delta American Express, with its $150 yearly fee and 3% international transaction fees, to get a companion ticket that i could never use being based in Hawaii.
3. I could never use my status to upgrade my seat when flying from Hawaii, because you don't let us.
4. I use Skymiles shopping deals whenever i can, and when in Honolulu use the Delta dining offers.

And TODAY: I decided that i would like to extend my vacation before returning to WAW. Having changed flights before, i expected the standard $250 +/- fare difference per person. I was unable to change online, and was instructed to call. Two representatives both told me that my ticket cannot be changed under ANY circumstances, i must fly. If i don't i would need to lose the ticket, and buy a one-way. I have for years bought tickets through Orbitz, specifically flying Delta, getting status, using Skymiles shopping deals, using your credit card despite fees, and THIS is what all that effort has amounted to: Fly or go f*ck yourself.

And for the bonus kick in the nuts, a one-way ticket costs $3400!!! But a round trip from the same date costs $1072. Do you hate your customers? Or just me? I've been a loyal Delta customer for years, but unless something is done to remedy this i cannot justify flying Delta any more.

I want my flight scheduled for Jan 22 to Warsaw to be unlocked, so i can change my flight as i please, incurring the itself already quite high $250 change fee per person. (That's nearly 33% of my original ticket price after all). Otherwise Star Alliance, and their much better connections to and between KRK, WAW and the US with HNL are going to receive my attention. This is absolutely unacceptable, i feel wronged and cheated.

I forgot to add the ever-diluted value of Skymiles, but i'm sure they've heard quite a bit of it anyway. Regardless, they did not bother to even respond to my e-mail. I understand that Delta has a new 'Basic' fare and this time the Orbitz ticket i booked fell into that? (My assumption, i've changed Orbitz bought cheapest-tickets and could always change)

Today i called once again, and asked for a supervisor immediately. The supervisor told me that not being able to change is nothing new, and that there's nothing she can do. After complaining further, she said she would ask what the cost would be to 'upgrade' my ticket to a fare that could then allow for a change. She came back with: $250 ticket change fee (standard), $270 to upgrade it to a changeable fare, and $50 to take the ticket from Orbitz. And this included the waiving of the price difference. Fantastic. $570 to change an $800 flight, AFTER receiving a 'discount'? I told them i was upset, and again pointed out the effort i go through to stay on SkyTeam. No avail. The agent told me she couldn't do anything (read: wouldn't).

United/Lufthansa/Lot here i come. I can fly in and out of KRK, avoid WAW hotels and hopefully wont need to sit in Seattle for 7 hours when i fly any more. Just what do i use my 350,000 miles on?

Great customer service from Delta

Not only did I have an amazing flight crew on a recent flight, not only did I get upgraded at the 6-day window on every flight, but when my Dreamliner launch flight to WAW from ORD cancelled due to the 787 grounding, I called customer service to change my flight so I could return to New York 5 days early.

I was surprised - and gratified - that the very nice woman at the other end of the phone not only got me on a flight at the exact time I would have asked for the next morning - but she also said that she was waiving any change fees (I did not even broach the subject of fees).

Thank you, Delta!

I received the following e-mail from DL today:
Hello Mr. SHIB,

Our records indicate that your SkyMiles account name does not match your saved Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Secure Flight name.

In 45 seconds or less, you can take advantage of an easy one-time sync opportunity to match your SkyMiles account name with your Secure Flight name and avoid any impact to your future bookings.

Click 'Update Now' to log in to your SkyMiles profile on delta.com and update your full name, including your first, middle and last names to exactly match your government-issued ID used for travel.

Your SkyMiles account and Secure Flight names will be synced automatically. Please note that you will not be able to continue into your Delta Profile until the name sync has been completed.

...›
I selected the link and was directed to a page with this introduction:

The passenger name in your Delta profile is required to be the same as the Secure Flight full name provided to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) when booking reservations. We have detected your name may need to be updated. Please choose one of the following options to ensure the name in your profile is your full name exactly as it appears on the government-issued identification that you present at the airport when traveling.

But, all of the menu choices that I was given to ensure that my name was exactly the same as my name as it appears on the driver's license... were the same and already matched my driver's license.

So, I called the Diamond desk and was told that TSA is becoming more stringent, and that the problem was that my name in the Secure Flight database had a space between my last name and "Jr" and my DL profile name did not.

Anyone with a "Jr" in their name probably knows that the DL computers cannot handle the space between the last name and Jr and concatenates the two.

Solution: SMS agent changed my name in the Secure Flight database so that it matches the name in my profile (i.e., no space).

I hung up and went back into my profile. The same window appeared, but now it asked me to choose between my name with and without the space.

I called SMS back and the solution was... I was told to select the name without the space, even though the on-screen instructions were to select the choice that matched my government-supplied ID. (?)

Bottom line... waiting to see if TSA lets me though tomorrow. And... it sounds like TSA is about to require DL to reprogram their computers to be able to handle the space between last names and "Jr" (or other suffix).

Refund for unused years of multi-year skyclub membership?

I bought a 3-year SC membership at the end of last year, and almost immediately I knew I wanted my money back. I tried calling multiple customer service lines & actual SC desks, and I emailed several folks whose info I was given by the aforementioned SC agents. No response received to any of my emails or messages left over a month ago. Has anyone had success getting a refund of their SC membership? I'm willing to eat the current year, but it seems like the remaining two years should be refundable according to any basic standard of customer service.

Advice Needed: If you could go anywhere Delta fly's where would you go?

Hello, I am sorry if this is not the right forum, so please move if another forum is better, but since we'll be flying Delta I thought this was as good as any to post from.

My wife and I are celebrating our 10 year anniversary this year and would like to do a one week trip to celebrate, sans kids! Due to work travel, I have been able to travel all over the world the last few years and my wife has been unable to go with (mainly because we have a 4 and 3 year old at home). Like many of you, we have an incredible amount of miles/hotel points so that is not a worry.

We would be flying out MSP. If you had one week (I know, not a ton of time) to travel any where in the world, what would you recommend? Ideally, I'd like to go somewhere that I haven't been before. We're not huge beach fans (though if we were by a beach we'd probably do a day of it) and love to site see, be active, hike, etc.

The options we're currently considering are:

Barcelona for a few days; then French Rivera/Monte Carlo
Greece for a few days; then Italian Rivera
African Safari

Here are the places I've traveled to that I'd like to stay away from so we don't duplicate if possible:

Throughout U.S.
Throughout Canada
Guatemala
Mexico
Brazil/Argentina/Chile
Australia (Melbourne)
South Africa (Cape Town only)
Turkey
Italy (Venice, Rome, Florence)
France (Paris)
U.K.
Turkey
Dubai
India
China (Shanghai)
Japan (Tokyo)
Netherlands (Holland)
Ireland (Dublin)

Long winded post/question, and again, I apologize if this is the wrong forum. But I really appreciate the travel/points expertise provided by so many and am sure you all have some great recommendations to consider.

Thanks!
